A new fossil known as the ‘Duelling Dinosaurs’ depicts predator and prey as they died in combat. A dramatic fossil, but also one that reignites a controversial debate; it could provide the final piece of the puzzle to prove that T. rex was not alone in the Late Cretaceous.

30 years ago veteran of dinosaur science, Bob Bakker, discovered a skull belonging to something new. He named it Nanotyrannus, the pygmy tyrant. But his announcement was met with surprising scepticism from the scientific community.

There was a perception that in Late Cretaceous North America there was only one top predator, T. rex, and that if smaller bones were found they would surely be a young Tyrannosaurus and not something new.
